Books: Herbs for Health and Beauty

cover Plant Spirit Medicine: The Healing Power of Plants by Eliot Cowan  "Healing at the Spirit level with the help of plant spirits.... This book is about healing at the deepest and most fundamental level. Herbs and plant medicine heal at the physical and emotional level. Cowan has learned how to communicate with the Spirit of all of life in the form of plant spirits and collaborates with that Spirit to heal at the level that transforms illness into health. Not about herbal medicine or symptomatic intervention, this process is about contacting the phenomenal power of love that is the Source of life and in cooperation with this Source, determining the underlying cause of imbalance, which manifests as illness, and directing Spirit to provide the kind of intervention that restores balance. This book is about restoration of balance and health, a magical process and a simple one; but this healing requires the kind of sobriety, intentionality, and heart that Carlos Castaneda alludes to in his books about shamanic journeying. Cowan is a deeply committed healer who has traveled into the awesome and sometimes fearful world of Spirit to bring back wisdom for all of life. The book is an introduction, filled with wondrous stories and enticing examples. Read it if you want to enter more deeply into the mystery of being and transformation. Read it if you want to be astonished at possibilities that seem mythical but which Cowan assures us are quite literally possible for anyone willing to practice diligently. Read it if you just want to be impressed with one man's journey into mystery. Whatever your reason, if you're interested in the possibilities of being fully human, I recommend that you read this book." Reviewed  by wholeworld@aol.com Michael Martino from East Hartford, CT, USA
cover Sacred Plant Medicine : explorations in the practice of indigenous herbalism by Stephen Harrod Buhner "This book is the best book I have ever seen on sacred herbalism. Unlike Eliot Cowan's book, this book goes into much needed detail and tells how to physically heal a person with a plant as well as emotionally. Stephen Buhner has very good control over his writing and he makes the reading fun as well as educational. I suggest this book to those who want to have an in detail knowledge about herbs and the spiritual healing that plants can have on all of us." Reviewed by "a reader from Washington"
cover Jude's Herbal Home Remedies: Natural Health, Beauty & Home-Care Secrets (Living With Nature Series) by Jude C. Williams "Indispensable!!  I am an herbology student, and my herbal and nutritional references are many, however, this is the one book that I turn to more often than any others. It gives complete herbal instructions in an easy to use, fun format. I am purchasing copies for my teenage daughters who seem to find something new in it everyday. It is a book you should not be without. If you are looking for a book with complete, effective herbal remedies for not only your family, but for your household and pets- LOOK NO FURTHER!! Jude, God bless you!"  Reviewed by tarabky3 from Somerset, KY
cover Herbal Antibiotics: Natural Alternatives for Treating Drug-Resistant Bacteria (Storey Medicinal Herb Guide) by Stephen Harrod Buhner "Great Book! Stephen Buhner continues the run of great books he has been giving us with one of the best overviews in print of why bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics. The book is extremely user friendly and the herbs can be searched individually or searched by resistant bacteria. Scientific studies show how each herb has been tested against particular resistant bacteria. Dosages, preparation and use are all easy to find. A truly great book in an important field. I highly recommend it!"  Reviewed by "a reader from Sandpoint, Idaho"Reviewer: A reader from Sandoint, Idaho
cover Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics by John McKenna "Mother Earth cures...
Natural alternatives, which are actually original cures. In the current medical community antibiotics are becoming less and less effective, for a number of reasons, so we need to return to the natural cures and old ways. The problem with this is- who knows which herbs, how to use them, and what effects they have. This book is a great beginning resource. Written by Dr. John McKenna, he explains various methods for healing or treating. This book contains case by case studies and results. It is not difficult to believe that nature works better than synthetic, it has always been that way. I recommend this book, and studying Native American and Asian natural healing methods. Please be responsible when choosing the herbs recommended in this book. If possible, grow your own (organically) and replant. Mother nature supplies the ingredients, but we must replenish so that everyone may enjoy the benefits. Enjoy the Natural Antibiotics book, pick one up for a friend while your at it!" cover Jiaogulan: China's "Immortality Herb"--Unlocking the Secrets of Nature's Powerful Adaptogen and Antioxidant  by Michael Blumert, Jialiu Liu  LEARN ABOUT THIS GREAT NEW HERB! Jiaogulan, China's Immortality Herb, is full of information about this new herb (new in the West anyway). I picked it up because I have high blood pressure, and this herb is known to normalize blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and help with general heart health. The evidence of the herb's efficacy in treating many health problems is impressive! And it's all backed up with scientific studies. I have to admit, I ended up buying the herb and using it, and it has helped me lower my blood pressure without taking any heavy drugs. What a relief! Read this book if you are at all interested in improving your heart health!" Reviewed by Susanne from Pinehurst, CA

This book is the most complete, comprehensive reference available on ginseng. It takes the information in most other ginseng books and compliments it with the most up-to-date information available. A must for anybody into health, fitness, herbs, well-being."  Reviewed by DocRonDC@aol.com from Rancho Mirage, California
cover Herbs of the Bible: 2000 Years of Plant Medicine by James A. Duke  "Must-Have" for Every Herbalist, Spiritual Healer, etc! I was fortunate enough to be able to read this book before it went to press, as I was asked to give a quote for the back of the book. It is thorough, well researched, and is a valuable resource for scholars, healers, herbalists, historians, spiritual healers, students - well, for everyone! Herbs that were mentioned in the Bible are explained and includes a look at how they are still used today. Anyone familiar with Dr. Duke's work will want this on their library shelf!" cover Dr. Duke's Essential Herbs: 13 Vital Herbs You Need to Disease-Proof Your Body, Boost Your Energy, Lengthen Your Life by James A. Duke, Ph.D. "Dr. Duke attributes his long, healthy life of more than 70 years to a combination of good genes, good diet, and good luck-and to 13 specific herbal supplements. In Dr. Duke's Essential Herbs, this unchallenged leader in the field of herbs shares his list of the 13 herbs he believes will help almost anyone, regardless of age, improve and maintain their health. Not just a collection of trendy supplements, this is the personal prescription of "America's herbal laureate." He provides information about each of the supplements, along with herbal combinations, stories, native lore, and dosages, and information on the different forms an herb can take, from teas to tinctures. Much of Jim Duke's internationally-recognized authority stems from his three decades with the USDA. He has appeared in Time, People, USA Today, and the New York Times, among others. In Dr. Duke's Essential Herbs, the pre-eminent herbalist offers valuable guidance for incorporating herbs into the ultimate plan for healthy living."
cover The Green Pharmacy: The Ultimate Compendium of Natural Remedies Form the World's Foremost Authority on Healing Herbs by James A. Duke "Packed full of useful medicinal plant information & stories. This book is an excellent reference for anyone interested in herbal healing. It's easy to read and difficult to put down. The book is organized by disease states, instead of herbs and their uses like most herbal books. You can find multiple areas pertaining to each herb listed in the index. Dr. Duke, with his vast experience and botanical knowledge, created a fascinating book that includes many stories about various herbs and people that he has meet during his many travels and his work for the USDA. While some herbs have numerous studies about their ingredients and effects, Dr. Duke informs the reader about potentially useful herbs for conditions from Allergies to Yeast Infections. And if that wasn't enough, it includes a recap of Dr. Duke's life and how he came to learn and love plants. His knowledge of plants and their constituents is almost endless. Even well read herbalist can learn something from Dr. Duke." Reviewed by Peter A. Lundy RPh,MA (plundy3@hotmail.com) from Muncie, Indiana
cover Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal: A Guide to Living Life with Energy, Health, and Vitality by Rosemary Gladstar "If you only buy one herbal, this should be it! I own many herbal books, but this one stands head and shoulders above all the others. Reading this book is like walking into a house with treasures hidden at every turn. Unlike other herb books I've read, Rosemary explains how using herbs is not just a way of treatment, it is a way of LIFE. She explains how herbs can become a part of your nutrition, medication, beauty routine, garden and home. All her recipes work fabulously well. They have obviously been refined over the years and stood the test of time. Her little life anecdotes which appear scattered throughout the book are delightful, instructive and serve to draw you further into her world. Her resource list at the end of the book is extremely helpful. Thank you, Rosemary, for sharing your world and love of plants with us. I truly hope that this book will be passed down to my kids and their kids and beyond (if it doesn't get too beat up from being in the kitchen all the time!). Reviewed by "a reader from Bay area, CA"
cover Herbal Healing for Women: Simple Home Remedies for Women of All Ages by Rosemary Gladstar  "Rosemary Gladstar's Books - MUST READS... Rosemary Gladstar's "Herbal Healing for Women" is at the top of my list of 'must reads'. I've taken her herbal homestudy course and read most of her books. As an herbalist student I have shelves of herb-related books and this is one of my favorites. Gladstar is one of the most respected herbalists today. Her books are easy to read and understand and full of helpful recipes. One problem with many herbal books is that they only mention what certain herbs are good for. Gladstar also explains how to use them and simply enough for anyone to understand. When my very pregnant daughter mentioned that her stretched skin felt sunburned I went searching for help. I checked through all my 'woman' herbals but only this book had a suggestion. I found the recipe for "Pregnant Belly Oil" which was easy to follow. The ingredients were easily found here at home and in town. The best part of it all was it works beautifully and smells great! .... Buy this book and use it! You won't be disappointed." cover Rosemary Gladstar's Herbs for the Home Medicine Chest by Rosemary Gladstar "Herbs to always have on hand. Rosemary Gladstar truly knows her subject matter. She has perfected the way to individualize health concerns and write detailing the herbal treatments for that area. In this book, however she has given us the most important and the most "universal" (in terms of their diverse uses) herbs that we should always have on hand. I don't think it was an accident that her name is Rosemary. Good work Ms. Gladstar." Reviewed by Jamin Condou  from Whittier, CA

cover Male Herbal Health Care for Men by James Green "One Stop Shopping on Herbs Specific for Men... The sub-title for this book is "Herb Care for Men & Boys" but the book does far more than this. Its is an excellent source of information about specific ailments afflicting men and what can be done about them. His style of writing is most enjoyable as the topics, herbal suggestions with recipes, and use of technical herbal terminology is presented in a real home-style fashion. Reading it made me think of an old friend who was giving good natured advice to me. There are sections on how to pick the right herb, how to prepare the herbs (infusion, decoction, etc), on Wholistic way of life vs Allopathic MD treatments, a pictorial glossary of the herbs, informative glossary, and wonderful folklore & herbal recipes for most every male complaint. There is so much no available on "women's" complaints & herbal treatments, but so very little on the male counterpart." Reviewed by Derek (hermes8@backinsf.com) from San Francisco, CA
cover Healing Wise (Wise Woman Herbal Series) by Susun S. Weed  "What a powerful book! It has changed the way I feel towards modern medicine, the chaos in my life, and even my backyard. The seven featured common weeds are given voices and distinct personalities. For instance, dandelion speaks from this book with a charming and joyous French accent. My medicine cabinet has fewer pharmaceuticals these days and an increasing assortment of odd little bottles of tinctures, oils, and salves that I have had great fun making from plants I have found within walking distance of my home. The voice of Wise Woman wisdom rings throughout this book and I find myself turning to this book for solutions to my various discomforts instead of calling the doctor." Reviewed by Margaret C. Goddard from Kingston, NY  "Healing Wise is in my top five herbal texts... Written simply and effectively, Healing Wise is one of the very best herbal texts I have come across. Weed's emphasis on a small number of herbs having the ability to do a great many things is important--it is a "back to basics" approach, one that I feel is essential in this day of "more, better, best". Though I utilize many other herbals, Healing Wise is the book I usually grab first. Thank you Ms. Weed for opening my eyes (and heart) a little wider to the world around me, I am grateful." Reviewed by "a reader from Utah".
cover Wild Woman's Garden: 7 Radical Weeds for Women Over 40 by Jillian Van Nostrand, Christie V. Sarles  "Wild, wonderful and weedy. Jillian and friends have written a friendly herbal companion for women in midlife. This book is succinct- seven herbs, each with a drawing and a page of information, followed by information on the growing and preparing of herbs. Wild Woman's Garden covers all aspects of these herbs, from sowing the seeds to using them for your health. Yet you are not overwhelmed with too much information. Now I can't wait to enter midlife so I can be a Wild Woman!" Reviewed by Andrea Crowley (andreamidwife@hotmail.com) from Attleboro, MA.
cover Medicine Grove: A Shamanic Herbal by Loren Cruden  "Marvelous medicine from Loren Cruden... As an herbalist, I am always looking to expand my knowledge of the plant world. Its great to know textbook uses of herbs and one can be quite successful in employing these techniques however, to learn directly from the plants is a true blessing and a healer's dream. Loren Cruden directs us to do this in her fabulous book, Medicine Grove. She is undoubtedly in tune with nature and while I believe she is gifted in this area, I also believe she consciously works at it. She generously shares her knowledge in this book, making it possible for all of us to re-connect with the spirits of the plant world. Thank-you Loren! In addition to spirit world connection tips, there's an excellent materia medica, tips for growing herbs and forms for applying medicinal herbs along with many unusual herbal tidbits included in the appendices. While I have a rather large herbal library, this is an outstanding addition. Put this book beside Eliot Cowan's Plant Spirit Medicine - they're a powerful pair!" cover The Ancient and Healing Art of Chinese Herbalism by Anna Selby "Highly recommended as a reference for Alternative Medicines.  This book, by Anna Selby is the definitive guide for anyone interested in healing oneself in the "traditional" sense. Long before man discovered writing, the use of Chinese Herbs as a source of medicine and other uses, was widely used throughout modern-day China. This fantastic book describes vividly the ancient "tools" of Chinese Herbalism and how to incorporate them into everyday "modern" life. Filled with amazing facts and references concerning this ancient art, Anna Selby cleverly describes how to put this valuable medicinal tool to work for you in the 20th century. Filled with dozens and dozens of illustrations, this valuable book is not only a good reference to Chinese medicine, but a practical, day-to-day guide on how to incorporate this ancient healing art into your everyday life." cover Pdr for Herbal Medicines (Physician's Desk Reference for Herbal Medicines, 2nd Ed) by Medical Economics Staff  "Better than the 1st Edition...  This new edition of the PDR for Herbal Medicines goes beyond the first edition, published in December of 1998. While the first edition was somewhat limited by dated, unreferenced information, this one is much more up-to-date and includes recent references to the literature, such as the St. John's wort interactions with indinavir and cyclosporin that were just published this year. Each entry gives a botanical overview, describes actions and pharmacology, and discusses indications and usage in various medical traditions. There is information on clinical trials, and more material on herb/drug interaction, precautions, contraindications, adverse reactions, and dosage. Having a complete herbal reference is a necessity for physicians and other health-care providers in today's world - whether they want to include some herbals in their armamentarium or merely wish to head off possible herb-drug interactions among the patients who are treating themselves."  Reviewed by Jerry Cott from College Park, MD
